Your house does well to protect you and your family against the harsh elements. Unfortunately, like most things in life, you must maintain and repair after a certain amount of time has passed to make sure it does the same job it did when it was first constructed. One of your issues could be your windows. As the years go by, they will wear out from weather conditions, and extreme temperatures. This can cause the once water-tight seal to loosen and allow air and moisture to seep in.
If you start to notice discoloration of your window frame, or around your window in general. This may indicate your window is not completely secure. If you suspect your window may have lost its seal, it is best to look at it as soon as possible to ensure no major will be inflicted on the interior of your home.
How to fix your window leaks
- Check the caulking of your window
- If it is damaged or worn, clean your window frame and recaulk
- Clean dirt, debris and insects from weep holes in the frame bottom. Use a small wire to unplug these holes.
- Make sure the sill at the bottom of the window frame is pitched downward to drain water toward the exterior.
If by examining your window you find more water damage than anticipated. Call a window replacement professional to see about redoing the frame and window. Make sure to check your households weak points often to maintain a good and solid household. Be smart, be safe!
