Roofs: A Leak Has Sprung

12/28/2020 (Permalink)

Imagine sitting in your cozy chair at home. You’ve turned on the TV, your favorite show is on. Everything is perfect, but then you hear it; a constant dripping of water hitting your floor. You discover your roof has sprung a leak and think, what do you do?

  • Identify the present source of the water
  • Place something under the leak to catch the water
    • A bucket is optimal but a bowl, or a saucepan can do the same job.
  • Identify the main source of the water
  • Place a bucket underneath to catch all drops from all the sources
    • If you find there is too much water collecting in the buckets, do your best to switch them out when needed and place rags or an old t-shirt around them in case it overflows without you knowing.
  • Dry affected areas

If you were quick enough to handle your roof leak, you’ve avoided the worst of water damage. Call a roofer to fix the leak as soon as possible to ensure no further problems will occur. You may be lucky enough to have just one soft spot in your roof. However, your roof may have further vulnerabilities in its structure. It is best to have a professional determine what should be done. The longer this problem stays, the higher the chance your house will suffer major water damage.

If you find yourself in this unfortunate situation where your house needs water damage treatment. Do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of  Bangor/Ellsworth at (207)947-0400.
