Pipes: Be Wary of Winter
12/24/2020 (Permalink)
Lately, it hasn’t been too white of a Christmas this year. Snowfall has been rare and it seems like it’s getting warmer, but it’s safe to say that at some point the snow will fall consistently. The temperature will drop, be mindful that this can also affect your home, especially your plumbing. Frozen pipes can burst and potentially cost thousands in water damage.
How to prevent pipes from freezing
- Keep your entire home well-heated
- Make sure all windows and doors are securely closed
- If you notice any drafts, seal them as soon as possible
- Turn on your sink to allow water to run through, a little drip can make a difference
How to thaw frozen pipes
- Use a space heater, hair dryer or a heating pad and apply it to the affected pipe
- While applying your heat, have a faucet running to allow water to flow through when thawed, this will speed up the process as well
Keep in mind, it is always safest to contact a professional local plumber to solve this issue for you. Be safe and be smart.
