Stay Home - Flatten The Curve
4/14/2020 (Permalink)
As we all face this pandemic together, it's important to remember that we can only beat this situation by working together as a team. No one individual - or even group of individuals - can tackle this problem alone; it will take the concentrated efforts of each and every one of us to see this through.
Stay Home
This crucial step may seem difficult at times, especially as we head into warmer weather, but it is easily among the most important. By minimizing the amount of time we're in public - and by practicing social distancing when we are out and about - we can collectively reduce the number opportunities the virus would have to spread.
Keep a Safe Distance
Limiting face-to-face contact with others is one of the best ways to reduce the spread of coronavirus. Physical distancing - or Social Distancing, as it is commonly referred as - means keeping space between yourself and others you encounter outside of your home. To practice Social Distancing, you should
- Stay at least 6' away from other people
- Do not gather in groups
- Avoid mass gatherings and other larger groups
By maintaining appropriate physical distance during our day-to-day actions, we can help slow the spread of the virus in our communities
Wash Hands Frequently
Washing your hands often is another crucial tool to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It's not only important to wash your hands after being out in a public space; if you blow your nose, cough, or sneeze, washing them immediately after is advisable. The rule of thumb is to wash them with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water aren't handy, hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol will work in a pinch.
And remember: Avoid touching your face - specifically, your eyes, nose, and mouth.
Cover Your Cough
Sneezing and coughing are two ways in which the coronavirus can easily spread from person to person. If you are out in public, it's advisable to wear a cloth mask or covering over your face. Although you may not feel sick, you could still be a potential carrier of the virus, and the cloth mask will help block the droplets from a cough or sneeze. If you're in a private setting, use a tissue or the crook of your elbow, and discard the tissue immediately. Don't forget to wash your hands!

Tips to Minimize Your Risk
During these unique times we find ourselves in, many people are much more intently focused on their daily interactions; social distancing is a commonly heard phrase, which is a good first step toward helping curb the spread of COVID-19, the novel coronavirus currently gripping the world's attention. There are, however, a number of other steps you can take to help minimize the spread of the virus.
Good Hygiene
- Was your hands frequently, and use hand sanitizer if soap and water aren't available
- Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth
- Cover coughs and sneezes, using either a tissue or the crook of your elbow
- Disinfect “high touch” surfaces on a regular basis, such as:
- doorknobs
- light switches
- tables
- doorknobs
- handrails
- Increase ventilation by adjusting air conditioning, heat pumps, or opening windows
At Work
- Stop shaking hands – use other non-contact methods to greet coworkers and friends
- Use digital platforms for meetings
- If they must be face-to-face, hold meetings in open, well-ventilated spaces
- Disinfect “high touch” surfaces frequently, like:
- desks
- keyboards
- light switches
- doorknobs
- telephones
- Consider rescheduling, postponing, or canceling large meetings and gatherings
Stay Home if...
- You are feeling sick
- You have a sick family member in their home
Getting through this pandemic will require effort and vigilance from each and every one of us. While it may seem difficult and stressful to completely change the way we go about our daily lives and business, our efforts to flatten the curve will hopefully bear positive fruit.

About Coronavirus
The CDC is responding to an outbreak of a respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and has spread to 60 locations internationally (as of this publication), including cases in the United States. The virus known as “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”) is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person or through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
Scope of Cleanup Protocol
The SERVPRO of Bangor/Ellsworth team can perform a proactive cleanup that involves facility or structure cleaning and disinfection where the customer states that there is no active known threat of COVID-19 contamination or exposure. The customer will be required to acknowledge that cleaning and disinfecting will only apply to the current state of the structure and contents. The structure would not be protected from future COVID-19 contamination if an infected person was to enter and occupy the building.
Cleanup Scope of Work and Planning
The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and tables at a minimum.iii These same surfaces are mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces as well, including:
• Kitchen/Food Areas
• Bathrooms
• Schools/Classrooms
• Offices
• Retail Spaces
• Water Fountains
• Shelving and Racks
• Sales Counters
• Carpets and rugs
• Stair Handrails
• Elevator Cars
• Playground Equipment
• Fitness Equipment
Cleanup and Disinfecting Procedures
Cleanup procedures generally include cleaning of porous and non-porous surfaces, disinfecting of non-porous surfaces, cleaning and disinfecting of equipment, tools, and/or supplies used for cleanup process, and disposal of waste.
The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus.
