Melting Snow and Your Home

3/10/2021 (Permalink)

With winter wrapping up, we now get to enjoy the nice and new weather. But all of this snow melting makes water flow, and the water has to go somewhere. If it can’t find it’s way to the ground to be absorbed, it may let itself into your home and cause water damage. In some scenarios if your home is in a more muddy environment. The ground absorbing all of the water can be a worry as well, as this can lead to a flooded basement if not properly sealed. Whatever the scenario, be on guard for your home when spring arrives. Look especially to these areas of your home for possible leaks.

  • Doors and windows
    • The seals will eventually wear out and may require a change if you feel a draft or see a pool of water, it’s a good indicator you have a leak and are due for a change.
  • Roof
    • In a previous blog post we spoke of the importance of keeping your roof well-maintained, the same principal is here, If you allow your roof to continuously take a beating and not check it, there will eventually be a leak.
  • Basement
    • Ensure that your basement remains dry and doesn’t take up any water from the outside. If it is a recurring problem; try to put your valuables high up away from the water or in plastic totes.

If the water becomes unmanageable and you see mold or a weakness in the structure you’ll need an expert to guide you through this crisis. SERVPRO of Bangor Ellsworth has the specific water damage training and experience to help you through this tough time. We specialize in water damage restoration—in fact, it's the cornerstone of our business.
